Puff Love Headscarf – A free crochet pattern

I’m so happy to be announcing the first pattern in a new crochet collection, the Puff Love Collection!

I recently found myself with that crochet itch (you know the one) and I wanted a meditative pattern that wouldn’t require too much brain power, but would also keep me engaged. I added on the challenge of trying to use up one of the smaller single skeins I had in my stash.

After trying a few different motifs, I got a haircut. I bet you weren’t thinking that was where this story was heading, huh? Regardless, my new hair gave me the inspiration to try making a headscarf. I am NOT someone who spends a lot of time on their hair, but a girl can dream.

Back to the crochet…

I finally settled on this darling little combination of puff stitches and single crochets worked on the bias and I couldn’t be happier. The pattern has just enough interest to keep you wanting to work one more row, but it’s an easily memorizable repeat that will let you relax into your stitching.

Once you start, you won’t want to stop crocheting, and you’ll have a new headscarf before you know it!

I’m also excited to say that this tiny but mighty little headscarf has inspired a whole collection of crochet accessories, home decor, and maybe even a garment or two!

Let’s talk supplies!

Materials you will need:

  • Approximately 95-114 yds / 104 m (or more if you want a longer scarf) DK weight yarn or any yarn that creates a fabric you like
  • 4.0 mm (G) crochet hook (or hook size required to meet gauge)
  • Darning needle

For my scarf, I used Koigu Kersti Merino Crepe in 1503. This is a high-twist, stretchy yarn that is oh-so lightweight and fit my needs perfectly. While I absolutely loved my result using this yarn, I also think a quick project like this should always have stash-busting appeal.

I think just about any yarn could work for this project, but an important thing to consider is how much stretch your yarn has. Whether you want a more stretchy scarf or one with less give is really up to your preferences, hair type, and how you want to wear your scarf. Just remember that different fibers will act differently when put under stress (like being tied around your head) for extended periods of time.

I personally can’t wait to try a version in a linen or cotton blend for those super hot summer days.

If you aren’t sure how your yarn will behave, it’s time to make a gauge swatch!

The dreaded gauge swatch…

Good news! Gauge is not necessarily crucial for this project, although it can be important to make sure you have enough yarn. If you are playing a game of yarn chicken, it might be a good idea to make a little swatch and weigh your yarn to see how far you will be able to get in your scarf.

Because the headscarf is such a small project, I’m tempted to encourage you to skip  a gauge swatch and start the project right away! If you are concerned about yardage or how the yarn you are using will perform after blocking, you could create a small swatch and block it. Otherwise, if you work a few inches and like the way things are going, just keep crocheting until your scarf reaches your desired length!

If you want to make a scarf that matches mine as closely as possible, the gauge for the sample is as follows:

3 repeats of pattern Rows 2 and 3 measured 2” / 5cm x 2” / 5cm after blocking

The finished sample measured 2” / 5 cm x 44” /110 cm after blocking, but it is completely adjustable to your preferences.

Let’s jump into the pattern!

One important note before we begin: This pattern is not intended to be a tutorial. Some basic crochet knowledge is assumed, although this is definitely a beginner-friendly pattern! If you love this pattern and would like tutorials for future patterns in this collection, let me know!

Notes

  • Stitches within asterisks (*) indicate repeats
  • Ch 3 at the start of Row 2 counts as a stitch and a ch 1 throughout
  • Photos are provided at the end of the pattern for clarification on stitch placements

Headscarf Pattern

Setup: Ch 10

Row 1 (RS): 2sc in second chain from the hook, sc to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn

Row 2 (WS): ch 3, *sk 1 sc, ps in next sc, ch 1* 3 times, sk 1 sc, dc, turn

Row 3: ch 1, 2sc in first st at base of ch, sc in each ch 1 sp and ps across to last ch 1 sp, sc2tog last ch 1 sp and second st of turning ch, turn

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until scarf reaches desired length, ending with a RS row. Sample was worked to 40” / 100 cm

Border

Do not turn to work on the WS after finishing your final row

With RS facing, ch 1 and rotate piece to work along left side

Work a sc border around all four sides of the piece, using a ch 1 at each corner as you rotate to work along the next side

Note: I found that working 1 sc into each sc row and 2 sc into each turning chain worked nicely along the sides of the piece. On the top and bottom, work into each st.

Finishing

Weave in your ends, block if desired, and show off your new accessory!
